Tirumala Devi wants to complete the rendition of 600 Annamaya compositions

N.Ch. Tirumaladevi belongs to a musical family of Nallan Chakharavathula and is a new name in the field of Annamacharya Kirtana propagation. She is the niece of N.Ch. Krishnamacharyulu, a legend in his field. A post-graduate in Science, a techie with remote sensing as her specialisation, she was drawn to music and has been specialising in collecting and performing the compositions of Annamacharya. She has a large collection of songs already set to music by renowned musicians and musicologists ranging from Rallapalli Aanantha Krishna Sarma to Garimella Balakrishna Prasad. She has also launched ‘Mission Annamayya’during the Karteeka Masam.

She began with a concert of rendition of kirtanas of Annamayya, at Thyagaraya Ganasabha for Samaikya Bharati, where she regaled the audience with some impressive numbers like Puttubhogulamu Meme in Mand, Chirutha Navvulavadu Chinnakka in misra Mohana, and Brahma Poojinche, a rare number in Pooria Dhanasri. She took a step forward in performing a hundred of these compositions as a kind of ‘Sangeetha Yagnam’ at Sri Venkateswara Temple Devasthanam in Chikkadapalli.

She wants to complete the rendition of six hundred compositions of Annamayya before the present celebrations of Ananamacharya’s 600th jayanthi year comes to an end, somewhere in 2008.

The repertoire of Tirumaladevi was wide and some were even unheard of. They included Annamayya Pancharatnamala written by Annamayya’s son Peda Tirumalacharya and grandson China Tirumalacharya. There were also some rare compositions on Govinda Rajulu, Sriramanuja, Dattatreya, Garuda, and Sudarsana Chakra. Kirtanas on Mahalakshmi and other deities were also rendered. She chose a particular set of kirtanas for a particularly deity They also included Dasavatara kirtanalu, Tatva Gjnana kirtanalu. Nrusimha kirtanalu, Srirama kirtanalu and Srikrishna kirtanalu, Srungara kirtanalu, Haridasa kiratanalu and so on. There were also some compositions she rendered on Alwars. Narayanathe Namonamo tuned by Balamuralikrishna, Kondalapai Nelakonna tuned by M.S.Balasubrahmanya Sarma and songs tuned by Dr. Pinakapani, Voleti, Mullick were also part of her repertoire.

The songs sounded more pious, pleasing and propitiating than any other general programme of Annamayya kirtana renditions, because of the devotional atmosphere around. One could enjoy the sahitya beauty of each kirtana and also a great variety of compositions that were rarely heard earlier. G.S.
