Ever-smiling TVG

Sir, — The recent function at The Music Academy, Madras, took me back to 1965. Balamuralikrishna introduced the ‘sawal-jawab’ swaraprastaram in an Abheri pallavi. His accompanists were M.S. Gopalakrishnan and T.V. Gopalakrishnan. In the ragamalika after the pallavi, Behag was the best. TVG, the versatile accompanist, faithfully reproduced the suswaram on the mridangam. To this day it is ringing in my ears. Prominent among the audience that evening was Semmangudi.

Later TVG moved on to other systems of music. Incidentally, both MSG and TVG learnt Hindustani classical from the Late Krishnanand. City music sabhas may not have extended to TVG the encouragement he deserves, but he encouraged talents such as Kadri Gopalnath and Varadarajan. At the end of it, the ever-smiling TVG is a contented musician and that’s what matters.
