ACCOLADES GALORE Yamini Krishnamurthy with her citation
Potti Sriramulu Telugu University conducted a three-day festival at Kuchipudi Village in Krishna District. This time other styles were also presented so as to expose the Kuchipudi artistes to other forms. About 150 dancers took part in the festival. There were Nritya Roopakas, Yakshaganas, Odissi and Kathak solo dances. The artistes were happy that they could dance on the very soil where Kuchipudi art took birth. But the facts remains that the University is bereft of funds and is satisfied with a promised grant of Rs. 50 lakhas corpus fund, by the government.
The vice-chancellor Dr. Manjulatha announced that she's ready to organise more of such activities by raising funds from philanthropists, if this grant gets materialised. Her argument was if these functions were held continuously for years, Kuchipudi centre would develop into a tourist attraction and gain reputation equal to that of Konark and Khajuraho festivals.
This year's Siddhendra Nartana Puraskaram was presented to Dr.Yamini Krishnamurthy that carried Rs.50,000 cash award, a citation and memento and shawl. Yamini naturally was very happy that she received this award on the land she visited when she was young and learned the art.
The seminars featured talks by some eminent personalities. Chinta Adinarayana Sarma spoke on `Natya Sastram vis-a- vis Kuchipudi dance', Yeleswarapu Srinivas on `Usha Parinayam and Nava Rasalau' and Chinta Ravi Balakrishna spoke on `Annamayya Sankeertanallo Bhamakalapam'., while the subject of 'Annamayya Sankeertanallo Bhamakalapam' was dealt with by Chinta Ravi Balakrishn, G.B.Sankar Rao gave a comaritive picture of 'Bharatamuni Natya Sastram and Nandikesuni Bharatarnavam'. Similarly there was another comparative study of Kuchipudi with Kathakali Natya Prakriya by P.Ramadevi and Dr.K.Suvarchala Devi spoke on 'Chaturvidha abhinayas in Dance forms''. Vedantam Radhe Shyam spoke on 'Nayika Patralu (roles of heroines) in Yakhaganas'. Dr.Vedantam Ramalinga Sastry spoke on Daruvu's in Kuchipudi roopakas. He is the present principal of Siddhendra kala Kshetram. All these talks, some added with demonstration, were quite educative. These talks would be brought out in a book form by the university, for the benefit of students, according to the University sources.
On this occasion veterans in this Kuchipudi art were felicitated. They included Pasumarthy Sitarama Sastry, Chinta Ramanjaneyulu, Lanka Annapoorna, Yeleswarapu Nageswara Sarma, Y.K.D.Prasada Rao, Bhagavatula Rama Murthy, Uma Rama Rao, Mahankali Mohan, Vedantham Venkatachalapti Sastry and P.V.G.Krishna Sarma.
It is high time that the university documents the work done by the veterans to enable the future generation of artistes to benefit.
