Of bravery and sacrifice
Set in the backdrop of a war between two ancient kings, Sayibaba Natya Mandali’s drama Khadga Tikkana revolves around the heroics of Khadga Tikkana. Presented under the banner of Andhra Nataka Kala Samithi of Vijayawada, mark
ing its 43rd anniversary, the drama was staged at Gokaraju Laila Ganga Raju Kala Vedika in the premises of G.V.R. Government College of Music and Dance. The story is about a conflict between Katamaraju, ruler of Yelamanchili Samsthanam and Sidhiraju, ruler of Nellore Samsthanam that finally results in a gruesome war between the two kings. Tikkana, the army chief of Sidhiraju goes to war initially but retreats and returns home. Angered by his cowardice, his wife Chanamma and his mother rebuke him. Faced with ridicule, Tikkana goes back to the battle field where he fights valiantly and dies. P.V.S. Krishna was brilliant in his portrayal of Khadga Tikkana. The performance of V. Vasantarani (Chanamma), G. Ramanayya (Katamaraju) and Ch. Baburao (Sidhiraju) were also excellent. The credit for the slick script, efficient direction and musical score goes to Ponnapalli Viswanarayana Krishna.
