Spirit of X-mas

Amrita Varshini’s play on the birth of Christ was a slick production.

The songs and verses were well positioned in the play

Enacted A scene from the play.

Amrita Varshini cultural association organised festivities at Ravindra Bharati last week that included the staging of a full-length play titled ‘Kreestu Jananam- Mahimalu’. Korrapati James wrote this play in 1953, with songs and verses placed at right places of drama.

It was a slick production that opened with the scene of three wise men spotting a star, their visiting the place where baby Jesus was born. Then the play moved through many events of Jesus’ life, incorporating some of the miraculous situations of how Jesus went to the rescue of the people. And it ended with crucifixion and resurrection, which is the greatest of all miracles.

The impressive scenes included the Baptism of Jesus, Sermon on the Mountain and the Last Supper.

The last scenes showing Jesus carrying the cross to which he was finally nailed were quite movingly presented. This play was directed by M. Bhajarappa, a veteran in the field of Telugu drama. Krishna played the main role of Jesus, understanding the spirit of the character. Pattabhi as Peturu (Peter), Kanakambaram as John, one of the important disciples of Jesus, Simhachalam Naidu as Yakub (Jacob), Sudhakarbabu as Yuda (Juda), Suhasini as Mariamma (Mary), V. Babu Rao, the president of Amruta Varshini, in the negative role of Anas, a priest of the Romans who pleads against Jesus and Srinivaas as Kaifas, played their roles interestingly. Rajababu’s music support was notable for its over all impact. The songs and verses were well positioned in the play like the one set in the scene showing shepherds and people offering presentations after Jesus was born.

Rev.V. Moses Babu was the chief guest at the function presided over by Dr. Rallabandi Kavitha Prasad, Director, Department of Culture.
