Doing the guru proud

Vijayalakshmi’s students exhibited sincerity in their learning on stage.

It’s the season of cultural extravaganza, and this time it was students of Vijayalakshmi Ramanan who presented a Bharatanatyam recital in Sabari Mandapam at Lord Ayyappa temple, R.K. Puram, recently in the Capital.

Titled ‘Margam’, the performance began with Ganesa Vandana. It was a pageantry of colour and flow of emotions from the neat adavus and abhinaya of both junior and senior students.

The young girls Marini, Sulekha and Vidyadhari exhibited purity of techniques in the Nritta segments, Allarippu and Jatiswaram with the same ease as the seniors Subha, Sukanya, Ragothaman and Ashish.

Dhandayudapani Pillai’s Varnam “Moham Aginen Inda Velayil” in raga Karaharapriya was a visual interpretation of nayika longing for her lover and seeking solace in her sakhi. Shruthi and Deepti who enacted the item carried the audience to that mythological era. “Shabdam” was another beautiful abhinaya piece performed by the two girls.

The next item was choreographed by Vijayalakshmi in ragamalika set to roopaka tal titled, “Vaada Krishna”, which described the pranks of Lord Krishna as a child.

Perfect expressions

Vijayalakshmi also choreographed a padam “Thottathil Kandavar Yaar Thozhi” in raga Karaharapriya set to aadi tal which depicted the “viraha bhava”. The dancers, being so young, still had perfect facial expressions. The keertanam “Nadanam Aadinal” in raga Vasantha was another nice portrayal of the cosmic dancer Nataraja in all His postures and manifestations.

The duo Ragothaman and Ashish enacted Vishnu’s incarnation on earth as Rama in Tulasi Das’s bhajan “Sri Rama Chandra” with perfection. Vibrations of the jathis in this thillana in raga Bilahari shook the rigidity of the chilly evening. The concluding item was “Hari Varasanam” which made the audience stand up to pay obeisance.

The performance was accompanied by vocals by G. Elangovan, flute by G. Raghuraman and mridangam by Bejanki Krishna.
