Feminism in Telugu literature
Sahitya Surabhi which regularly organises either a talk on some aspect of literature or a literary discourse every first Sunday, organised a lecture on ‘Telugu sahityamlo strivaadam’ (feminism in Telugu literature) by Ayyagari Sitaratna
m in the Builders Association Hall.
A Reader of Telugu in Mrs. AVN College, Sitaratnam is a Ph.D holder on the same topic.
Tracing the history of plight of women from ancient times thanks to the highly prejudiced social order, she said these situations compelled Gurajada to script Kanyasulkam, Puttadibomma Purnamma in the 19th century.
Speaking about the origin of the feminist movement, she traced its history to the literature of the last quarter of the last century in Telugu.
She hoped that the movement would get firmly rooted in near future.
Chairing the session, founder-president of the Surabhi Vriddhula Kalyanarama Rao said feminism should be appreciated from the view point of the fair-sex quoting a few episodes from the feature films Ek Din Prati Din in Bengali, and the Assamese film Agnisnan. Former Principal of Visakha Women’s College P. Janaki also spoke.
