Turn of the wheels

S.M. AAMIR

CNBC and NDTV Profit put their weight behind the most popular vehicles of the year.

The world might have to wait for Hyundai i-10 but the i-10 has not had to wait to win accolades. At the recently concluded CNBC Auto and NDTV Profit Auto Awards, Hyundai i-10 walked away with the Car of the Year trophies. While CNBC also gave it t he Small Car of the Year award, NDTV Profit, putting it slightly differently, also called it the Best Compact Car of the Year.

Incidentally the two channels have started a new concept for satellite TV with their active association with the automobile industry. We are all familiar with Zee and Star TV’s association with sports like cricket, tennis and hockey, and even film awards from sundry channels, but it is only in recent times that channels have openly started judging the merits and demerits of who is who in the automobile industry. As for the awards for Hyundai, Shah Rukh Khan may be the brand ambassador, but it looks like the car has enough wheels and momentum to go the distance now.

Customer satisfaction

Incidentally, the awards were announced on the basis of customer satisfaction, and were given away by satisfied customers at the CNBC awards night. Speaking on the occasion, Ajay Chacko, director, TV 18 Business Media, said, “The CNBC-TV 18 Autocar Auto Awards is one of our premier projects widely recognised as a benchmark for auto excellence in India. This year through the green future theme, we intend to make these awards a catalyst for a cleaner and greener progress of the industry by raising awareness and eliciting a commitment from manufacturers. We hope to use this platform for proactive changes rather than simply restricting ourselves to being laudatory.”

Expressing his delight over receiving the Car Of The Year award for Hyundai i-10, Managing Director of Hyndai Motor India Limited, H.S. Lheem dedicated the award to the Chennai factory team and suppliers for their contribution.

CNBC’s award for the Best Value for Money Car was given to Maruti SX 4, while Best Designing and Styling went to BMW 5 series, Best Executive Car to Honda Civic, and the Best Premium Car to BMW 3 series. In the NDTV ceremony, the Midsize Car of the Year went to Mahindra Renault Logan, Executive Car of the Year to Nissan Teana, Premium Luxury Car of the Year to BMW 5 series, SUV of the Year to Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and the Car Manufacturer of the Year to Maruti Suzuki. Jagdish Khattar, the cynosure of all eyes at the glittering event, was adjudged the Next Gen. Automotive Man of the Year.
