Music fest at Hampi

The aradhana of Purandaradasa, referred to as sangita pitamaha, is observed by sabhas in Chennai and musicians render his compositions and pay homage. In Hampi, his birth place, the occasion is celebrated as ‘Pitha Maha Sri Purandhara Dasara Pu nya Dhina’ in the form of a mega music festival. This year the celebration took palce on February 7and 8. It was well attended by a large gathering of musicians, musicologists and connoisseurs.

The celebrations began amidst the chanting of Vedic hymns by scholars, while abishekam was performed to the idol of Dasa.

Reputed vidwans played on the nagaswaram at the venue and at Sri Virupaksha Temple. Vagesh, Director, AIR, New Delhi, was the chief guest. He dwelt at length on the importance of Carnatic music and stated that musicians are the ambassadors of our nation. Prof. V.L.Sudarshan of Annamalai University and his party rendered Dasar Pancharatnams, leading a large group of musicians from Karnataka. ‘Ninna Dasa Naadha,’ similar to Tyagaraja’s ‘Entharo Mahanubavo’ enthralled the gathering. ‘Jagadho Dharana’ in Nattai, held the devotees spell bound.

This was followed by ‘Ela Baradhe’ (Gowli), ‘Vasudeva Ninna’ (Arali), ‘Sathyajagat Idu’ (Varali) and other kritis. Hindustani musicians from neighbouring states also participated in the function. Reputed Baghavathars from Karnataka rendered Sangeetha Upanyasam on the life and compositions of Purandara Dasa. Now, an event of this nature should not be confined to one place. Doordarshan should arrange live telecast of the programme on the lines of the Tyagaraja aradhana at Tiruvaiyaru and take it to the people across the country.
