Sriram Bharathi Cultural Society celebrated the 126th birth anniversary of Subramania Bharati at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan recently. Venkatapathy (Central Deputy Minister for Law) presided, conferred the titles and gave away cash awards. The title, ‘Bharati Elakiya Selvar’ was conferred on Thanu Neelamani and ‘Ethiroli’ Viswanathan. Veteran musician N.C.Soundaravalli was conferred the title, ‘Bharati Isai Selvi.’
Shri Vigneswara Cultural Academy, Nesapakkam (Ph: 2472 1162) recently conferred the title, ‘Sangeetha Seva Ratna’ on V. Narasimhan, secretary, Asthika Samajam, Tiruvanmiyur, in recognition of his services. M.S.Prakash, C.R.M., IOB, Chennai was the chief guest. Packirisamy, Principal, Tamil Isai College, Chennai, actor Delhi Ganesh and others took part. Sriranjani Santhanagopalan presented a concert.
The first anniversary celebration of Isai Payanam concerts, presented by Charulatha Mani, was held on February 16 at the Narada Gana Sabha.The chief guests for the evening were playback singer P.B.Sreenivos, actors ARS and Kathadi Ramamurthy, and music director Ramesh Vinayakam. They congratulated Charulatha on her success and Isai Payanam’s wide reach. P.B.Sreenivos presented a poem of appreciation he had written in Tamil, the sixth letter of each line when put together reading ‘Charulatha Mani Velgavae.’
Presenting a vote of thanks, T.S.Ranganathan, director, Giri Trading Agency, said that Giri Trading had so far released 10 DVDs of ‘Isai Payanam’ The function was followed by Charulatha’s ‘Isai Payanam’ concert in which she dealt with ragas Kaanada and Durbari Kaanada. “It was an unforgettable experience for me to sing ‘Ponnenben Siru Poovenben,’ a Durbari Kaanada film song (from ‘Police Kaaran Magal’) originally sung by P.B.Sreenivos in his very presence. He was very happy and I was thrilled,” observed Charulatha Mani.
The Tambaram Music Club observed Tyagaraja Aradhana recently. A highlight of the event was the honouring of veteran vocalist O.S.Tyagarajan with the title Sangita Choodamani. Musicologist V.V.Srivatsa was the chief guest. The sabha secretary, S. Bhashyam, felicitated the artists who have been supporting the sabha in conducting the event for the past several years. The musicians included N. Ramani, P.S.Narayanaswami, T.K.Govinda Rao, T.R.Subramaniam and Geetha Rajasekhar. The ceremony was followed by the rendition of Pancharatna kritis. OST and Ramani presented concerts. The curtain came down with Anjaneya utsavam.
