Glimpses of history
A lecture-demonstration on natya-kala, where its nuances and myriad concepts were shared, was held at Dakshinamurthy Hall, Mylapore. Stalwarts in the field of Bharatnatyam and Kuchipudi took part in it. It was organised jointly by Divyanjali institute of Bharatanatyam of dancer Divyasena, and Gana Mukundapria. The lecture was delivered by Bharatnatyam exponent V.P.Dhananjayan and the demonstration was done by Kuchipudi artiste Kishore Mosalikanti. With an aim to enlighten young learners of the art the event saw the young outnumbering the old. . “This is definitely a good sign,” said Dhananjayan. Elaborating further on Natya as a living art, he said, “It is a concept that involves the body, mind and spirit. Hence, our classical and traditional forms cannot be termed as mere ‘dance’ as it has a lot more to it than just moving your hands and legs.” The event saw more demonstration in the second half. Kishore Mosalikanti began with the history of Kuchipudi. Since Kuchipudi is still evolving, Kishore concluded his demonstration with an experimental presentation of a varnam using a ‘tharangam,’ the plate that is an important part of Kuchipudi.

In a novel venture, Carnatic musician Sudha Raghunathan as president of the Tamil Nadu Chapter of the International Tamil Centre, brought together 1,330 school children to sing Thirukkural. It was a part of a day-long events organised by The International Tamil Centre at the Chettinad Vidyashram auditorium.
Debates, discussions, poetry, mimicry, music, dance… a host of activities all revolving in and around Tamil took place.
The guest list for the various programmes, conveners and participants included a host of dignitaries and Tamil lovers such as Prof. Meer Mustafa Hussein, AVM Saravanan, Achi Manorama, J.G.Kannappan, Avvai Natarajan, MAM Ramaswamy, Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, Kumara Rani Meena Muthiah and so on.
