Akhandam at Purasawalkam
Sri Sadguru Sangeetha Samajam, established in 1955, with the aim of propagating the kritis of Saint Tyagarja, had organised an Akhandam - an endless non-repetitive flow - of Tyagaraja kritis as part of a Mahotsavam held to honour the sadguru.
The event that took place at Srinivasa Perumal Temple at Vellala Streeet, Purasawalkam, was open for The samajam was founded by Dr. Krishnaswami, and for him the sadguru was his philosopher and guide. all age groups — learners to regular performers to veterans.
The Akhandam this year commenced at 6 p.m. on March 1, with a Harinamasmaranam followed by the kritis ‘Sri Ganpathini’ and ‘Guruleka Etuvanti’.
It culminated on March 2, with the singing of Pancharatna kritis - the clock showing a little beyond 6 p.m. 251 krithis were sung in 24 hours.
Earlier in December 2007, the samajam had conducted music competitions in Tyagaraja kritis (Pancharatnam, General, Utsava Sampradayam and Divya Nama Sankeertanam) and the prizes were distributed after the Akhandam. The scheduled finale also saw the portrait of the Sadguru being taken round the temple (Pada Oorvalam) accompanied by the nagaswaram.
T.K. Govinda Rao, one of the senior members, patiently listened throughout and supervised the marathon.
