MY FAVOURITE RAGA
|
After a sedate song, when you render Pantuvarali, it creates the right mood for the main raga.

Choices aplenty: R.Ganesh
“Like how every dish has its own taste and flavour, so it is with every raga. And like how we relish some dishes more and they become our favourites, there are some ragas that become an integral part of our musical palate. For me they are Arabhi, Mohanam and Thodi,” begins R.Ganesh.
“During my vocal accompaniment for my guru Maharajapuram Santhanam, I have observed many aspects of ragas — their positioning in a concert, duration of delineation etc,” he reminisces.
“My favourite list of ragas also includes Khambodi, Durbar and Devagandhari. In the vivadhi mela, I like Vanaspathi and Nasikabhooshani. Ragas such as Husseni, Atana and Anandabhairavi are a staple in my cutcheris. But one notable thing about raga Pantuvarali is that it is the best neutralising raga. After rendering a sedate song or a vivadhi or a sub-main raga, when you take up Pantuvarali, it creates the right mood for the main raga.
“The other prathimadhyama ragas I like are Lathangi, Vachaspathi and Vijayanagari. The lighter ragas towards the end of the concert should be chosen in such a way that they leave a lasting impression in the minds of the listeners. My favourite tail-enders are Sivaranjani, Janasammodhini and Revathi,” sums up Ganesh.
