My favourite raga
INVOKING ANCESTORS: Sriram Parasuram
Says Sriram Parasuram, classical singer and violin maestro, adept at both Hindustani and Carnatic streams: “It is the unconditional moment of joyful celebration that the raga demands and that’s what I give it; at that particular moment,
it becomes my favourite raga; I soar with it and flow along with it.
“The Carnatic Thodi is one of my favourites as it is a challenging raga. It is infinite in its possibilities and is elusive. In its pure form, it corresponds to Bhairavi of the Hindustani style.
“A raga is something that has links with the great singers of yesteryear. Bhairavi has borne the stamp of great singers like Omkarnath Thakur, Bhimsen Joshi, Siddeshwari Devi and so on.
“Darbari brings to mind the realm of Akbar, the eloquence of Tansen, the gayaki of Ustad Amir Khan and in recent times the rich and variegated style of Kumar Gandharv.
“I also like Bhopali (Hindustani) and its equivalent Mohanam (Carnatic) very much because of the symmetry and precision that they embody. The raga exposition poses a challenge. It is like trying to extract lyrical beauty out of mathematical equations and permutations.
