Encomiums well deserved

S.R. ASHOK KUMAR

Rotary Club of Madras, Mylapore Uptown, felicitated K. Balachander with a Lifetime Achievement award recently.

Recognition: Director K.Balachander being honoured.

It was a delightful evening for the audience at Kamaraj Arangam recently, where director K. Balachander was honoured with the lifetime achievement award by the Rotary Club of Madras, Mylapore Uptown.

There was not only music from singers Chitra, Mano and Suresh of Sruthilaya, and his troupe, but also a speech from poet Vairamuthu felicitating Balachander.

Twin tribute

It was also a tribute to A. R. Rahman, whose compositions, such as ‘Kadhal Rojave’ (Roja), ‘Veerapandi,’ ‘Putham Pudhu Boomi’ (‘Thiruda Thirudi’), ‘Enge Enathu Kavithai’ (‘Kandu Kondaen Kandu Kondaen’) and ‘Anjali Anjali’ (‘Duet’) were sung.

Vairamuthu spoke at length about the director. He said that only Balachander could have opted for ‘Neerkumizhi’ as the title of his first film. “ Similarly, I generally do not want to watch the visuals of my songs, as I feel only three of them have proved visually great. One is ‘Ayiram Thamarai’ ( ‘Alaigal Oyvadhillai’), ‘Uyire’ ( ‘Bombay’) and ‘Enna Satham’ (‘Punnagai Mannan’). Here too he had the guts to insert a song in a sequence where two lovers were going to die. I am grateful to him for giving me work in three films (‘Vaaname Ellai,’ ‘Annamalai’ and ‘Roja’) when I was jobless. I feel he deserves the Dada Saheb Phalke award and I request the State Government to institute an award in his name,” he said.
