Music for a reason

Pleasing renditions marked the 28th anniversary celebrations of Sangeetha Janakulam.

The 28th anniversary of Sangeetha Janakulam, a charitable trust established by noted flautist and exponent of Carnatic vocal, I.V.L. Sastry, was celebrated at Kalabharati last week. K. Sivananda Murty and founder editor of Mihira, M.R.L. Rao, who were the guests of honour, were all praise for the octogenarian and his daughters — noted vocalists Saraswathi Vidhyardhi and Sarada Subrahmanyam — and granddaughter K. Lavanya and flautist son Kaliprasad.

They have been serving the cause of Carnatic music by way of imparting training free of cost to many an enthusiast besides helping them come out with flying colours in the certificate and diploma examinations.

The cultural programme started with the rendition of a song in praise of Sangeetha Janakulam. Scripted by Kodavanti Subrahmanyam, it was set to music by I.V.L. Sastry and rendered by Akundi Venaktarao and V.V.B. Sankaram, who are teachers at the school. The flute concert rendered by Kaliprasad in the company of M. Satyanarayana Sarma (violin), M. Sridhar on mridangam and I. Anjaneya Sastry (ghatam), was the highlight of the evening.

Starting with Sriraga Varnam followed by Abheeshtavarada (Hamsadhvani), Prasad, after rendering Ninuvinaagamari (Poorvikalyani) and Neevalla gunadoshamemi (Kapi) adorned with aalapana and swaram, discerningly elaborated Vidamuseyave (Kharaharapriya). It was concluded with a scholarly thani by Sridhar on mridangam and Sastry on ghatam. Rendering of Venkatachalanilayam (Sindhubhairavi) and Dhanasri Thilana followed by Ksheerasagarasayana (Anandabhairavi) provided the grand finale.
