A veritable galaxy of musicians and musicologists had gathered at the Kasturi Srinivasan Hall on the occasion of the book release of Prof. S.R.Janakirman’s latest work titled, ‘Essentials of Musicology in South Indian Music” on May 9.

The book was released by music veena exponent Kalpakam Swaminathan and the first copy was received by Prof. T.R.Subramanyam.

In his presidential address, N. Murali, president, The Music Academy, paid rich accolades to SRJ for his long years of dedicated service to the cause of classical music. Two of SRJ’s eminent contemporaries P.S.Narayanaswamy and T.R.Subramanyam felicitated SRJ.

Felicitating Prof. SRJ on the occasion, Sriram Parasuram spoke of how the stalwart had surmounted severe visual impairment to rise to iconic heights in all the three musical spheres of scholarship, musicology and performance and SRJ had balanced Sangita Lakshana and Lakshya.

He also said that this book would serve as a very useful guide to musicians of today in matters of musical concepts and theory as it seeks to encapsulate the main points contained in the musical treatises which for the most part are inaccessible to the younger generation.

Vocal concert

The book release function was followed by a brief vocal concert by Mangala Ravi, accompanied by V.L.Sudarshan on the violin and Tirupathi Sudhakar on the mridangam all of whom are sisyas of SRJ. Presenting many of Prof.Janakiraman’s compositions, Mangala gave a neat and tidy account of her singing skills and musical artistry.
