Playing a prank A scene from the play.
The influence of parental behaviour on young minds was the main theme of the Marathi play Ek April written by Yogesh Soman and staged by ‘Kalabhishek Parivar’ recently.
The one-act play performed by amateur and young artistes depicted the pranks played by friends on their hostel roommates and how it affects one’s mind. Four friends living in a hostel away from their parents forms the storyline. Three of the roommates decide to play a prank on their friend Ajay, on April 1. They create an atmosphere as if Ajay’s father has come to visit them. Ajay is made to believe that his father is in the room and poor Ajay starts talking much to the amusement of his three roommates.
The play takes a serious turn, after Aiay (enacted by Vishwajeet Wadwalkar) falls for this prank and reveals the deep scars inflicted during his childhood due to the dictatorial attitude of his father.
Ajay vents out his feelings about his father’s rude behaviour and the way he treated his mother.
The play with a message on how parents dominate and do not allow their children to choose their career path, and how the children react when they grow up was well depicted in the play.
Saurabh Gharipurikar handled the subject well on his directorial debut. Sushant Deshpande, Suhas Barve and Pranav Gharipurikar played their roles well as the three roommates.
Light effects by Vinay Patankarand and sound effects by Mrunal Deo were apt and suited the mood of the play.
