Director Leo Thaddeus talks about his maiden feature film, ‘Pachamarathanalil.’

Director’s cut: Leo Thaddeus says his film ‘Pachamarathanalil’ deals with the theme of unconditional love.

Director Leo Thaddeus says he is happy with the response to his maiden feature film, ‘Pachamarathanalil,’ which stars Sreenivasan and Padmapriya in the lead. Nassar plays a cop. The director talks about the making of the film and more.

Why did you choose this subject for your debut venture?

My concept of entertainment is not confined to comedy, as it is generally perceived by many filmmakers and I think that my film has a genuine storyline. ‘Pachamarathanalil’ is about the unconditional love between a couple and their adopted daughter. It also talks about the relationship the couple shares. Relevance of the title of the film

The title signifies the love of the parents that shelters the child from the heat of the world. I have also tried to convey certain other aspects.

Although we often gauge success on the basis of certain achievements, the concept tends to vary from person to person. Here are two individuals who have set aside their priorities and find happiness in taking care of a kid who is not their biological child.

Has the story of ‘Pachamarathanalil’ been inspired by Mani Ratnam’s ‘Kannathil Muthamittal’?

Not at all. I think ‘Pachamarathanalil’ is an entirely different film. But ‘Kannathil Muthamittal’ is one of my favourite films and it is for viewers to decide if shades of the theme have influenced my film.

Are Keralites averse to experimental films?

It is never easy to ignore the preset mindsets of certain sections of the audience. There is always a risk in attempting something new, whether it be a theme, story or treatment of a film. Also, many viewers expect certain actors to play the same kind of roles again and again.

Is the current atmosphere in Malayalam Cinema favourable to aspiring directors?

Young directors are expected to make super hit movies such as ‘Kilukkam’ or ‘Rajamanikyam’ for their debut, which obviously is a tough task. I was fortunate to get a producer who believed in me.

Your next project?

I have started the script though it is too soon to announce the details. It tells the story of a group of youngsters and deals with their trials and tribulations.
