A tribute to the great violinist R.R. Keshavamurthy
|
OFFERING Prof. V. Ramarathnam was felicitated
Sangeetavidyasaagara,
the first memorial
function of the Late R.R.
Keshavamurthy, a prominent
violinist, was celebrated
last weekend in
Bangalore. The event
was organised by the Sri.
R.R. Keshavamurthy
Foundation comprising
his students, at the Malleshwaram
Seva Sadan.
The inaugural concert
was by Mysore M. Nagaraj
and Mysore M. Manjunath,
accompanied by
V. Praveen (mridanga)
and Giridhar Udupa
(ghata). The mesmerising
concert drew a full
house and gave the function
a befitting start.
Late R.R. Keshavamurthy
authored many
books delineating the
technical aspects of Carnatic
music, was a violinist
and performer par
excellence. But more
than anything else, as recalled
by his ardent disciple,
Venkatesh, R.R.
Keshavamurthy was an
affectionate and encouraging
guru. He thus established
a parampara
(tradition) of violinists
who stand out as accomplished
performers in
their own right today,
under his tutelage.
Three such disciples,
T.V. Ramaprasad, Dr.
Hamsini Nagendra and
Dr. S.C. Sharma rendered
a half-hour concert
each. This was
followed by an hour long
multimedia presentation,
to unveil the musical
proficiency, life and
times of R.R. Keshavamurthy.
Venkatesh recalls how
his guru was often seen
by people as a fastidious
and cold man, but was indeed
only a man of strict
values and principles. To
site an instance, Venkatesh
speaks in awe about
his guru that despite the
great heights he reached
in music, he never
skipped saadhana (practice)
every single morning.
As a tribute to the dedication
and contribution
to music , Prof. V.
Ramarathnam, was given
the title of "Saadhanaacharya',
along with a
cash award of Rs.10,000.
Prof. V. Ramarathnam is
a well-known Carnatic
vocalist, author, teacher,
musicologist and composer.
Disciple of Mysore
T. Chowdiah, and
served as the first Principal
of the University College
of Music and Dance,
University of Mysore,
since its inception in
1965. The foundation is
driven by its members'
zealous love and respect
for their guru. The enthusiastic
group is already
brainstorming
plans for their future
activities.
