The Joint Action Council for Women, a non-political and non-sectarian association, has been committed to the promotion of the status and welfare of women. Since its inception in 1983, it has been a trailblazer for networking among women’s organisations in Chennai. Founded by Dr. Sakuntala Balaraman and ably assisted by Radha Sridhar and a few other pioneers, the Association has served as a link between various women’s organisations transcending class, ideological and political barriers.

Through various projects, JACW has consistently lobbied for new laws, which support women’s development, and insisted on the implementation of existing laws. Counselling and rehabilitating distressed women through the ‘Sahodari’ help centres was one of their earliest efforts. The ‘Sahaya’ services directory was published to fulfil the needs of social workers. Today, JACW is monitoring the needs of a city slum offering health care and training programmes.

As a part of its silver jubilee celebrations, JACW along with Kalasadhanalaya is staging a dance-drama, ‘Daayinee,’ conceived by founder-member Radha Sridhar. The play depicts the status and changing identity of the Indian woman, from the Vedic times to the present day. Choreographed by Revathi Ramachandran, ‘Daayinee’ will be staged on July 12, at the Museum Theatre, 6 p.m.

On July 15, JACW, together with Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddi Women’s Association, is organising a seminar, ‘Women 2008,’ at Gokhale Hall, Luz, Mylapore, 4-7 p.m. The seminar, to be inaugurated by Mukund Padmanabhan, Senior Associate Editor, The Hindu, will discuss issues such as women and law and empowerment of women.

The valedictory function will take place on July 28 at the Russian Cultural Centre, 5.30 p.m. Dr. Nandita Krishna will inaugurate the event where the patrons and friends of JACW will be honoured. Booklets prepared by the JACW on domestic violence, healthcare, laws and consumer rights, Right to Information Act and so on will be distributed. Also on the agenda is video display on the history of the organisation and the release of the book, ‘Decoding Gendered Norms.’ The curtain will come down with tributes paid to the pioneering work of Sakuntala Balaraman and Radha Sridhar.
