The tomboy

VIJAY GEORGE

Despite being typecast as a bubbly youngster in most of her Malayalam films, Roma has been able to hold her ground in Mollywood.

I’m perfectly comfortable with the image of a girl full of life.

Oye bubbly! Roma’s sparkling performance as the tomboy has won her many fans.

She is perhaps the tomboy among the heroines of Mollywood and is loved by her fans for her charming energy. After making her debut in Malayalam with ‘Note Book,’ Roma believes she has every reason to feel content about the way her career has worked out. Last year she played the bubbly heroine opposite Prithviraj in the hit movie ‘Chocolate’.

This year in ‘Shakespeare MA Malayalam’, she donned the role of a simple village girl burdened by the responsibility towards her family. Though her latest release ‘Minnaminnikkoottam’ opened to mixed response at the box office, Roma once again made her presence felt as a young brat. In an interview, Roma talks about her movies and more.

How was it working in ‘Minnaminnikkoottam’ with its young star cast?

It was a wonderful experience. We all got along fabulously . The film deals with varied emotions played out through different kinds of relationships. My character, Rose Mary, is a really smart girl who always smiles despite her humble background. But you would never know that from her behaviour.

Aren’t you at the risk of being typecast as the bubbly young girl?

I’m perfectly comfortable with the image of a girl full of life. It’s worked out perfectly for me. I can carry it off and that’s not an easy thing to do either. But I am not sticking to that image alone.

My character in ‘Shakespeare MA Malayalam’ lived in a village, went through tough times and she was quiet different from my other roles.

Do you think your role in ‘Shakespeare MA Malayalam’ got enough appreciation?

It was nice to play a different kind of role from what I had done previously. Of course, the audiences have appreciated the change in me.

The usual practice for heroines here is to move on to other languages after starting off in Malayalam but you have done the opposite. Why?

I love Kerala and am happy with the way my career is going right now. In fact, these days, I am even speaking Tamil with a Malayali accent! On a more serious note, Malayalam Cinema has offered me more challenging roles. It has also given me the creative satisfaction that I crave as an actor. If some extraordinary offers do come up from other languages I may accept.

Some of your films, like ‘July 4’ for instance, have not been big successes. What attracts you to a role?

There are several aspects that I take into account while selecting a role, ranging from the banner, to the cast and the crew. Of course, the primary reason would be the prospects of my own character.

Among the characters that you have played on screen, which one do you think is the closest to your original self?

Every character I have played has had so much of the real me that I can relate to each one of them in one way or the other.

What are your forthcoming projects?

I will soon start work in director Shafi’s movie with Prithviraj as the hero. A few more offers are also in the pipeline.
