The ‘Boss’ of action

VIJAY GEORGE

Suresh Gopi’s new film ‘Boss’ has gang wars, action and doses of humour.

It’s on gang wars, but certainly of a different genre. Director Nissar’s ‘Boss,’ the shooting of which is going on in Kochi, is a mix of humour and action.

Suresh Gopi dons the role of the protagonist with Vasundhara Das as his heroine, ‘Pooja,’ who plays a top Tamil-Telugu actor. On a Sunday afternoon, while the rain takes a break, the crew is busy canning some shots in the lawns of a plush bungalow in Kochi. Jagathy Sreekumar, in the role of a CBI Officer named Vikraman, faces the camera and cinematographer Saloo George is guiding him through it.

Gang wars

“Two groups based in Kochi, one led by ‘Boss’ (Suresh Gopi) and the other by ‘Mallikkettu’ (Kalabhavan Mani) are at loggerheads with each other. The Boss has some cinema veterans in his gang such as Innocent, T.G.Ravi, Cochin Haneefa, Harisree Asokan, Unda Pakru and Santosh Jogi while Malli’s gang is packed with hulky thugs. Boss is a big time international gangster who operates from Kochi, Goa and Dubai. With the arrival of Pooja, the situation changes quite abruptly,” narrates Nissar.

Suresh Gopi had recently joined hands with the director for ‘Bullet,’ which is all set to hit theatres soon.

“I am playing a don, but it is a character with a dash of humour. There are lots of hilarious situations that involve my character,” says Suresh Gopi about his character in ‘Boss.’

Experimenting with roles

“I believe in experimenting with my roles and my characters in films like ‘My Mother’s Laptop’ and ‘Kavyam’ have been quite different. Since no one is quite sure about the formula to make only hit films, there are no real short cuts than to keep on trying,” adds the hero.

Vasundhara Das, whose Malayalam credits include ‘Ravana Prabhu’ and ‘Vajram,’ is happy to be back in Kerala. The heroine, who has a very busy schedule juggling her music career and her acting, says, “I have always maintained that I am a singer first and then only an actor. It has worked well for me and the offer to play the role of an actor in ‘Boss’ came when I had some time to spare. I had a great time shooting for my earlier films in Malayalam and jumped at the chance.”

“We were in search of a heroine who is not seen very often here in Malayalam, but should be familiar enough to the audience. Vasundhara suited the role perfectly,” says the director, as he narrates the next shot to Innocent. ‘Boss’ has been scripted by Satheesh K.Sivan and Suresh Menon.

‘Boss’ is being produced by S.Shajahan for Royal Arts and will be released during Ramzan. The other locations of the film include Alappuzha and Goa. Stills are by Ramdas Mathur.
