To catch a thief

VIJAY GEORGE

‘Run@Run’ tracks the story of a thief called ‘Kattla’ Gopalan.

Crooked path: Dileep, Radha and director Dipu on the sets of ‘Run@ Run.’ Dileep plays a crook who comes to a city in search of a fortune.

Director and scenarist Dipu’s film ‘Run@Run,’ narrates the story of a thief. Dileep plays the lead role of ‘Kattla’ Gopalan, a wily robber and burglar who comes to the city in search of a fortune.

The location for the day is a huge godown near Thammanam in Kochi. The scene has Dileep and Jagathy Sreekumar hiding behind a wall. Cinematographer Kannan places his camera on the floor and gets the thumbs-up from the director who is glued to the scenes on a monitor.

Hyderabad-based actor Radha makes her debut in Malayalam cinema as the heroine, Diana.

Humorous storyline

“The film has a humorous storyline. Gopalan is on the run and his identity is quite a mystery. He has two cronies Lakshmanan (Salimkumar), a pickpocket, and ‘Lavang’ Vasu (Jagathy Sreekumar), a small-time lottery ticket vendor. He happens to meet Diana, who inadvertently becomes a link in his nefarious activities. At the risk of sounding clichéd, it’s a completely different film,” says Dipu.

Dileep feels that the theme of ‘Run @ Run’ will click with viewers. “Gopalan has a definite aim in his life. He treads a dangerous path that takes him to more difficulties and danger. That happens to be the turning point in his life as well,” says Dileep.

The shoot of the film made news when Dileep accepted the hero’s role after walking out of a film that was to be directed by Tulasidas. Was he perturbed by the hullabaloo that ensued? “No, I was really busy with the production of ‘Twenty Twenty,’ which will release soon after Ramzan,” he says.

Dipu, however, confides that he was tense when all hell broke loose after Dileep accepted his film.

“I am thankful to Dileep for supporting me and reposing confidence in me,” he says. Dipu, a visual communications graduate, has assisted Priyadarsan and Sundar Das.

What is the difference between Gopalan and Madhavan, Dileep’s role in the blockbuster hit ‘Meesa Madhavan’?

“The two films belong to two different genres and cannot be compared.

The focus in ‘Run@Run’ is robbery. Most films tend to narrate the events and emotional aspects that force the hero into becoming a robber,” clarifies the director.

Jagathy Sreekumar, who plays Vasu in the film, says that his character is an impoverished chap who is struggling to make ends meet. However his greed for money lands Gopalan in trouble.

’Run @ Run’ is being produced under the banner of Bhavana Mediavision by Ullattil Sasidharan and will reach theatres in November. Lyrics by Gireesh Puthanchery and Anil Panachooran have been set to tune by Rahul Raj.
