‘Drona is no superhero’

SANGEETHA DEVI DUNDOO

Drona is a young man who understands his lineage, says Goldie Behl.

Fantasy film: Drona

Goldie Behl has had enough with comparisons between Drona and superhero films. “ ‘Drona’ is not ‘Spiderman’ or ‘Superman.’ It’s a fantasy film more than a superhero film,” he states. His debut film, ‘Bas Itna sa Khwab Hai,’ was a box office dud. Seven years later, Goldie has returned, mature with the experience that television has given him. He and his sister/producer Shristi Arya have been busy with television before ‘Drona’ came about.

Childhood buddy

Teaming up with childhood buddy Abhishek Bachchan, he insists, was not a planned move. “The story has references to the protagonist’s legacy and bloodline. I couldn’t think of anyone else but Abhishek. The character chose him.” The idea for ‘Drona’ came about after Goldie and his wife Sonali (Bendre) became proud parents. On Priyanka’s choice to play Abhishek’s bodyguard, he says, “She was the one I had in my mind. When Abhishek came up with her name I endorsed it.” Kay Kay Menon plays the bad guy and Goldie roped in Jaya Bachchan for the mother’s role. “That was the easy part. Being family friends, I consider her my mother and just had to call and request her to be part of my project. She agreed and said it was my responsibility to ensure that the role would befit her.”

Goldie clears the misconception that ‘Drona’ was long in the making and says, “We shot for 110 days in Namibia, Prague, Bikaner and Jaipur. There’s a lot of emphasis on special effects as well. We had six companies working on the project headed by David Bush and Charles Darby.”

He knows he’s being watched and is not afraid of being judged for his fantasy flick. “We’re banking on the script and you can watch ‘Drona’ for good old sword fighting and Indian magic,” signs off Goldie.
