All in the family: V.M. Vinu’s ‘Makante Achan’ tackles the stormy ties between a father and son.
Things are going at a frenetic pace inside a large bungalow at Olavakkode, near Palakkad, where the shoot of director V.M. Vinu’s film ‘Makante Achan’ is going on. Sreenivasan and his son Vineeth Sreenivasan team up for the first time in this movie.
Part of the bungalow has been turned into a village office where Viswanathan, played by Sreenivasan, is the village officer. Wooden tables, heaps of files, government calendars, an old wall clock… all help create the feel of a village office. The scene being canned has the village officer in a debate with his subordinate Krishnankutty (Salimkumar).
Family story
“‘Makante Achan’ is a family story that focusses on the generation divide. Parents have their dreams about their children’s future even when the children have dreams of their own. Viswanathan is an honest but strict village officer. He has high hopes for his children Vivek and Dhanya. Vivek (Vineeth Sreenivasan) too would like to live up to his parents’ aspirations but he has his own aspirations.
“Viswanathan’s wife, Rema (Suhasini), is a pillar of support for her husband. However when the generations clash, she is not quite sure whom to support, her husband or her son. Things take an unexpected turn and then…it is a suspense,” says Vinu.
Meanwhile cinematographer Manoj Pillai zooms his camera in for some close-up shots of Viswanathan and Krishnankutty.
Right cast
Adds Vinu: “We decided to cast Sreenivasan and Vineeth Sreenivasan, as they fitted the bill. Suhasini is still popular among Malayali viewers due to the roles she had once essayed in Malayalam Cinema, so she too was an obvious choice.”
Talking about his son donning the greasepaint, Sreenivasan feels that Vineeth seems to have gained confidence in front of the camera after his debut film, ‘Cycle.’ “Also, audiences will be able to relate to the father-son relationship in ‘Makante Achan,’” he adds.
According to scenarist Samjad Narayanan, ‘Makante Achan’ is about how different generations view life and their thought processes. “And also, as the title suggests, the focus is more on the father.”
The cast includes Thilakan, Jagathy Sreekumar, Janardhanan, Varada and Bindu Painikkar among others.
‘Makante Achan’ is produced by Seven Arts International Limited. The movie will reach theatres in January.
Lyrics by Kaithapram and Anil Panchooran have been composed by M. Jayachandran.
