COMPETENT DANCER: Lavanya Raghuraman

Kartik Fine Arts started its dance festival on December 1 and the inaugural performance was by Lavanya Raghuraman, a student of the Dhananjayans.

She is a graceful and competent dancer with clear footwork. She started her performance with a Ganesha stuti, a composition of Karaikudi R.Krishnamurthy in praise of the Gajamukha Nayaka.

This item incorporated a couple of interesting poses of Ganesha.

She then went on to the main item of the evening, the classic Husseini Swarajathi, ‘Emayaladi’.

Generously interspersed with nritta, the sheer length of the item left little room for elaboration in the abhinaya.

The abhinaya just touched upon Krishna’s infidelity, the Kalinga nardanam and so on, leaving the item a trifle nritta centric, though the nritta passages were not long.

Lavanya performed the item with sustained energy and correct expressions.

Challenging item

It was impressive that Lavanya was able to follow up this challenging item with another relatively footwork oriented song, ‘Adidum Arase’, a composition of her grandfather’s (S. Ramanathan), describing Lord Shiva’s dance.

The passage showing Nandi’s maddalam and Brahmas thalam were well brought out.

This item saw the singer, Lavanya’s aunt Vanitha Raghuraman, and the dancer in good sync. The performance concluded with a tillana by Lalgudi Jayaraman in Rageshri.

With nattuvangam by guru Shantha Dhananjayan, mridangam by Nellai Kannan and violin accompaniment by Vijaykumar, the performance had a well-rehearsed and competent feel to it, though Lavanya needs to reach out more to her audience, in her movements and expressions as well as her use of the stage.

There were flashes when her enjoyment of the dance was apparent as in some of the arudis.

Perhaps a padam with more scope for emoting may have helped too.
