In Tamil culture, land is divided into four, based on the nature of each terrain. The categories form the backdrop of the programme in which college students showcase their multifarious skills, with accent on the lifestyle of people in each, in the four-day Pongal special.
Pudhiya Konangigal
(Makkal TV, Tuesday to Friday, 22.30)
For four days at a stretch, the channel assures 96 hours of continuous viewing. This particular programme, which concentrates on comedy, will dwell on the present day life of the people living in the divisions mentioned above, in typical style. Instead of the usual timings, Pragadeeswaran and Senthil will entertain you late in the evening, with their humorous songs.
Makkal Virudhu 2008

The channel honours 31 achievers in the field of literature, music and theatre, besides those in medicine, agriculture, environment, sports and science, in the year gone by. Though this will be the first time Makkal Awards are presented, it is being envisaged as an annual Pongal event.
Mallukattu

If the intriguing title of the show brings to mind the well-known ‘jallikattu’ of the South, you aren’t off the mark. Just like the formidable bulls in ‘jallikattu,’ young, robust men will appear on imposing sets for a display of a variety of talents.
Aachi Thamizh Pechu Engal Muchu

The search for the best Thamizh orator has ended. Vijayan from Thanjavur has ‘Aachi Thamizh Pechu Engal Muchu’, first ever hunt for the best Thamizh orator in Tamil Nadu. An intensive search was conducted across the State in cities including Salem, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchi, Tirunelveli and Chennai. Innovative rounds were conducted such as ‘Kaaviya Surukkum’, ‘Vaadham Vivadam’ and ‘Vannangalum Varnanaigalum.’ The grand finale was held at Anna Kalaiarangam on December 20, 2008, where many literary icons and academicians participated.
Lyricist Snehan introduced the three finalists - Vijayan, Arul Prakash and Abirami. The final performance was staged in front of a live audience. The three finalists had to speak on ‘Thamizhan.netru, indru, naalai’. The special guest, Nakkeeran Gopal and the audience chose Vijayan and Arul Prakash as the top two.
In the final round, the two had to talk on ‘Naadu Engae Pogiradhu?’ This time, the voting was by Tamil scholars and the audiences. After a tie, Vijayan was declared winner and takes home prize money of Rs. 5 lakhs.
Pongal Special

Vijay has lined up with some exciting specials on January 14 and 15. January 14: At 7.30 a.m., it is ‘Sivakumarin diary’ where the actor takes a trip down memory lane. At 9 a.m., in a special episode of ‘Koffee with Anu Season 2’, Anu chats with veteran director Bharathiraja. At 10 a.m., Vijay and the crew shares their views on ‘Villu.’ At 12 noon, in ‘Nayanmigu Nayantara’, the actor speaks about her films and friends. At 1 p.m. in ‘Cheranin Pokkisham’, Cheran dons the role of anchor and gets celebrities including Sivakumar, Satyaraj and Kanimozhi to share the one thing that they treasure the most. At 2 p.m., watch the Tamil dubbed ‘The Transporter.’ At 5.30 p.m., a curtain-raiser of ‘Nandalala,’ a film by Mysskin, will be presented.
January 15: At 8 a.m., watch Premier Sirappu Pattimandram with Leoni as the judge. The topic of debate is ‘What is fuelling the society’s growth - Is it our traditional values or modernism?’ At 9 a.m. is ‘Neeya Naana’ where a debate on urban rural divide will be conducted and moderated by Gopinath. At 10 a.m. is ‘Vivel Azaghiya Cinderella’, a show that features Trisha. At 1 p.m., do not miss ‘Smiley Sneha’, where the actor will participate in adventurous sports such as rifle shooting and scuba diving. At 1.30 p.m., in ‘Darling Darling Divya,’ Divya Spandana shares her personal photo album with viewers. Get to know more about Arya at 2 p.m. on ‘Naan Arya’, where he speaks about his upcoming project ‘Naan Kadavul’.
At 3 p.m. it is ‘Chennai Virundhu’, a three day festival, where all the stars from the small screen will perform under one roof. Watch curtain-raisers of ‘TAXI 4777’ and ‘Villu’ at 6 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. respectively.
