Kudos to Kakkilaya

Ninety years and going strong, veteran freedom fighter Kakkilaya will be feted by friends and well wishers



NONAGENARIAN Celebrating a fulfilling life

Freedom fighter, a man who was in the forefront of the unification movement of Karnataka and prolific author — B.V. Kakkilaya, will soon be completing 90 years. Popularly known as BVK, Bevinje Vishnu Kakkilaya will be felicitated by the M.S. Kr ishnan Memorial Trust this Sunday.

A well-known leader of the Communist Party of India (CPI), Kakkilaya was a member of the Rajya Sabha, and a legislator in the Karnataka State Assembly. He has held many important positions in the Party including that of secretary of the Karnataka State party. He was also a much acclaimed trade union leader, who built the AITUC in Karnataka, with M.S. Krishnan.

On the eve of his turning 90, friends and well wishers are organising a felicitation and releasing a special felicitation volume “Nirantara”. The book will have contributions from eminent scholars and social activists across the country on current issues dear to this revolutionary leader, articles on his life and work written by associates, lectures delivered at ‘Kakkilaya 90- A dialogue with the new generation’ held in May last year, and articles by Kakkilaya himself.

M.C. Narasimhan, H.S Doreswamy, K.H. Ranganath, Ramesh Kumar, B.A. Moideen, Subbayya Shetty, G. Ramakrishna, Siddanagouda Patil, Radha Sundaresh and others will participate in the programme presided by Ko. Chennabasappa. Dr. Vijaya will introduce the book. The felicitation volume is priced at Rs. 300 but will be available at the function for Rs. 150.

The programme will be held on Sunday March 22 at the University Senate Hall, Central College, K.R. Circle, 9.30 a.m. onwards.
