On a new high

Ashutosh Gowarikar talks about the Phalke Memorial Commercial Film Award for ‘Jodha Akbar.’

Having bagged the Best Director trophy for ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ both at Filmfare and at Screen, Ashutosh Gowariker completes his hat-trick with the Phalke Memorial Commercial Film Award. The director is justifiably riding high.

After winning so many awards already, is winning the Phalke Memorial Commercial Film Award for ‘Jodha Akbar’ special?

Dadasaheb Phalke is one man whom I can’t thank enough for, in a way, pioneering the film industry. I’m really happy and overwhelmed; I would like to thank the entire academy on behalf of the entire team of ‘Jodha Akbar.’ I also feel the Dadasaheb Phalke award gives us a chance to meet and recognise the work of all those individuals who are behind the camera, who are not seen. What we see is not only a director’s or an actor’s work. There are so many aspects, which lead to filmmaking. The academy is very good for technicians.

With so many award functions happening these days, has the importance of awards decreased somewhere?

No, I don’t think so. Each award has its own importance, its own recognition and its own jury. Every jury takes its own decision and gives awards … so the more the merrier. Everyone gets encouragement, more so the technicians. I welcome any and every award function.

‘Jodha Akbar’ has got you so many awards. Do you think the film is lucky for you?

I would like to put it as – our hard work is getting paid. The entire team of ‘Jodha Akbar’ has worked extremely hard creatively. Everyone works hard but there are times when you get a story or a movie that is very special, ‘Jodha Akbar’ is one of them. We are very fortunate to be part of a film like this. The more awards a film gets, the better it is for the technicians; and a director is as good as his technicians.

How is your next ‘What’s Your Rashee’ shaping up?

I have just completed a major chunk of the movie and I will be completing the rest of the film soon.

What is your stance of the on-going producers vs. exhibitors strike?

I really want the strike to end very soon; a lot of things are at stake for both the parties.
