Last Saturday, Visakha Music Academy organised a Bharatanatyam recital by students of Nritya Kalabharathi of Bharateeya Vidya Kendram. Senior disciples of the principal of the dance institute, Avasarala Rukmajee Rao, P.S. Abhigna and M.R.L. Apoorva, individually and collectively presented the dances. The performances were choreographed by Rukmajee Rao, who also provided expert nattuvangam.

Fulfilling all requirements of a traditional Bharatanatyam recital, it started with Aparna’s presentation of the todayamangalam, a composition of Annamayya set in raga-tala malika. This was followed by the jathiswaram of Tanjore brothers, composed in Saveri and presented by Abhigna.

The mainstay of the recital was the padavarnam, Roopamujoochi of Dikshitar set in adi talam, todi raga. Later, Abhigna and Aparna individually presented Dikshitar’s Simhasana Sthithe and Dasaradha Rama of Ramadas. They together presented a composition of Madhurai Krishnan (adi talam in Hamsanandi), thillana of the same composer in brindavanesaranga and concluded on a serene note with Bhagyada lakshmi baaramma of Purandharadasa (in adi talam and madhyamavathi) and Mangalam.

With scintillating footwork executed in perfect laya with angika, and mukhachabhinaya with reasonably good stage presence, the performers danced their way into the hearts of the audience.

M. Venkata Rao, the music teacher of the institute, contributed evocatively melodious vocals. The mridangam by T.N. Chaitanya and violin by M. Neeladri Rao contributed grandeur to a splendid performance. Makeup was ably done by Surya Rao.
