Impressive recital

P. SRINIVASA GOPALAN

B.S. Narayanan’s concert came out as surprise to the rasikas.

Musical magic B. S. Narayana.

Kalasagaram presented a grand violin solo by B.S. Narayanan as part of its two-day fest.

A disciple of T. N. Krishnan, he served in AIR, Hyderabad as an A-grade artiste and has enormous experience of accompanying many senior vidwans and has a deep knowledge of music which reflected in his concert.

The hallmark of his performance was his sruthi suddhata and nadam.

He began his recital with Natakuranji varnam and took Vatapi in Hamsadwani with tisram pattern which was appealing. Rara maintidaka in Asaveri sounded soothing. Shobillu ragam followed next in a brief way.

Pantuvarali was taken for another detailed expansion in which Narayanan brought the Hindustani sancharas and made it more interesting. Sarasaksha of Swathi Thirunal with impressive swaram was the highlight.

The main attraction of the day was Thodi which Narayanan has given a brilliant display of the ragam. The continuation of classical sangathis in his ragam was appreciable.

In fact, his concert came out as a surprise for the rasikas.

Thyagaraja’s Enduku dayaradha in Misrachapu with matchy swaram made the concert more delightful.

The concert was further enhanced with percussion where in Jayabhasker on the mridangam gave good support.

Their tani misrachapu was attractive with tisram patterns as highlight Narayanan concluded his recital with Brochevaru in Khamas and Venkatchelanilayam in Sindhubhairavi.

On the whole, Narayanan and his team gave a soothing concert.
