Veena Vidwan Mysore L. Raja Rao’s birth centenary will be celebrated this Sunday

ACE COMPOSER L. Raja Rao
A day-long festival of music and dance based on his compositions, will mark the birth centenary celebrations of veena Vidwan Mysore L. Raja Rao on July 5 at the Ravindra Kalakshetra.
A musicologist and composer, he belonged to a lineage of vainikas patronised by the Wodeyar dynasty in Mysore for several generations.
His contributions to the world of music have been many, but he’s most noted for setting musical notations to hundreds of compositions of Haridasas and Shivasharanas.
He also wrote and published sangeeta shastra text books in Kannada.
A popular teacher and composer, his repertoire included swarajatis, varnas, kritis and tillanas.
The day will also be marked by a release of a CD of Vidwan Raja Rao’s compositions and reprints of his books.
The programme, organised by the Raja Rao Smaraka Pratishthana begins at 10.30 a.m. with noted litterateur U.R. Anantamurthy inaugurating it, followed by music and dance programmes and a saxophone concert by Kadri Gopalnath at 6.30 p.m. Call 98452-43204.
