WINSOME PAIR Chetan and Regina in Suryakanti
It is a long time since girls went gaga over a Kannada hero. I remember thinking I’d mistakenly entered a classroom in a girl’s college when I went to watch “Krishna” starring Ganesh.
It was not his looks, but attitude that seemed to send the girls squealing. He is definitely no Adonis but spoke with an endearing nonchalance and was the kind of guy a girl would take home to meet her mom.
He wed on an impulse on the eve of the release of “Gaali Pata” and Yograj Bhat was taken aback when I told him girls may no longer flock the theatres. “Now that’s something I hadn’t thought of,” said the slightly-surprised director.
The girls did melt away only to wait for the next hunk to drool over. “Aa Dinagalu” was released and there was Chetan, with his chiselled features, a toned body and eyes to drown in. Fans shrieked at his every utterance and soulful look.
His second film “Birugali” was blown away from the theatres thanks to the hammy handling by director Harish, but Chetan emerged unscathed. Nobody blamed him. He has to hone his acting skills, though. And unless he commits a professional blunder or does something silly in his personal life, he is here to stay.
From whatever I know of him, he may make a professional faux pas but is incapable of indiscretions in his personal life.
“Suryakanti” starring Chetan is blossoming, a tad slowly maybe, but looks as promising as director Chaitanya made it out to be.
The rains in Kundapur washed out a schedule that was planned there. Nasser, who plays a key role, got busy and so the unit got a break, which is not easy to take when you’re raring to go.
A long schedule has started in and around Bangalore, before the unit shifts to Belgaum and Goa. “I’m happy with whatever we’ve shot,” says Chaitanya.
Chetan sports short, spiked hair and has a lean, mean look to play the sharpshooter who transforms with love.
His co-star is Regina, with whom he has shot for only a couple of days. “I find her very mature for her age and she acts well too. It is easier to act when wavelengths match and the atmosphere is relaxed,” says Chetan.
Everyone who has listened to the songs tuned by Ilayaraja is raving about them, including Yograj, who has written the lyrics for one.
There was a schedule in Uzbekistan, where a song, some scenes and an action sequence were shot. “I liked the people and the place,” says Chetan, who is widely travelled. “It did not feel like we were in a strange country even though we were all visiting for the first time.” With shooting to be wrapped up by August you can await some clean entertainment this winter.
