The second season of ‘Kathaparayumbol,’ a talent hunt for the best ‘kathikan’ (storyteller) has begun with 38 contestants (23 girls and 15 boys) in the fray.

As the participants unleash their narrative skills, they will be judged by a panel comprising actor Vijayaraghavan, Kathaprasangam exponent Vasanthkumar Sambasivan and Tanuja S. Bhattathiripad. The show aims at reviving the art of kathaprasangam, which used to be the staple form of popular entertainment before the advent of cinema.

Each episode of this programme celebrates the great fat Indian wedding and its many avatars all over India. Each region, community and religion is rich in colourful ceremonies, rituals and traditions that turn the marriage into a function involving the entire social set-up.

Divided into segments such as ‘Minnukettu’ (on nuptial rituals), ‘Ponnu’ (all about jewellery), ‘Poove’ (about wedding finery and garments) and ‘Sadya’ (marriage feasts), each episode is an invitation to a wedding revelry.

Lohitadas film fete

Lohitadas, the master raconteur and director, is no more and in memoriam Asianet Plus screens some of his best works.

‘Chakram’ starring Prithviraj is on July 16 and ‘Joker’ with Dileep in the lead as a circus clown is on July 23. ‘Amaram’ directed by Bharathan and starring Mammootty rounds up the fete on July 30.

Here is a chance to watch the classics produced by the late Shobana Parmeswaran Nair. ‘Murapennu’ scripted by M.T. Vasudevan Nair and directed by Vincent is on July 11.

P. Bhaskaran’s ‘Kallichellamma’ scripted by G. Vivekanadan is on July 18 and A.B. Raja’s ‘Nrithashala’ is on July 25.

Idea Star Singer 2009

The popular reality talent hunt for the best singer is in its second stage. The remaining 40 contestants will compete in the ‘remix’ round and the ‘evergreen Malayalam songs’ round.

Mentoring them are their team leaders and singers Vidhu Pratap, Rimi Tomy, Anoop and Jyotsna.

Veteran playback singers K. S. Chitra and M.G. Sreekumar and music director Sharreth are the judges.
