Mrudanga Chakravarthy Dr. T.K. Murthy School of Music and Trust held a programme recently at The Music Academy to honour the mridangam maestro for his 75 years contribution to Carnatic music.

The event began with Dr. Murthy’s younger disciples presenting solo recitals. It was followed by a tani in Pancha Nadai by his senior disciples.

A video presentation traced the the life and career of Dr. Murthy, where various artistes shared their experiences of working with him.

The band Madras Tunes showcased four original compositions — ‘Vaan Megam’ with success as a theme; ‘Thoongudi Kanney’ - a soothing song that conveys love; ‘Unakkagave’ - dedicated to Dr. Murthy; and ‘Chakravyuha’ - a free form orchestral piece on the Mahabharata. The felicitation function commenced with the lighting of the lamp by N. Murali, president, The Music Academy, and MD, The Hindu, chief guest Ustad Zakir Husain, and ghatam vidwan ‘Vikku’ Vinayakram. Sriranjani Santhanagopalan rendered the prayer song.

A website on Dr. Murthy, designed and developed by Hrithvik Raja, was also launched on the occasion. A galaxy of eminent musicians and personalities felicitated the maestro on the occasion. T.K. Jayaraman, Murthy’s son, rendered a Venba composed by him in Shanmukhapriya. In a fitting finale, the audience was treated to a percussion jugalbandhi with Dr. Murthy on the mridangam, Ustad Zakir Husain on the tabla, ‘Vikku’ Vinayakram on the ghatam, Selva Ganesh on ganjira and B. Sivaraman on additional mridangam.
