A recital of select compositions of Annamayya set to intensely sensitive music by Sangeetha Kalanidhi Nedunuri Krishnamurthy, was the highlight of his 82nd birthday celebration organised at Kalabharathi last Sunday. Eleven-year-old Vinjamuri Anoohya buoyantly rendered the recital in the company of K.V.S. Prasad on violin and G. Venkata Rao on mridangam. Earlier in the evening, trustees of the Yaajee Educational Society, who organised the birthday celebration, honoured Nedunuri.

Former professor of A.U. Dept. of Sanskrit, Vedula Subrahmanya Sarma who was the chairperson of the function, Sadguru K. Sivananada Murty of Anandavanam Bhimili and G. Balakrishna Prasad of TTD Annamayacharya Project who participated as guests of honour, presented new clothes and gold ornaments to Nedunuri and adorned him with a crown made of flowers.

Speaking later, they hailed Nedunuri as the right recipient of titles such as Sangeetha Kalanidhi, Naada Vidya Bharathi and Sangeetha Vidyanidhi. They also said that he is one of the few vocalists who exemplify scholarly mastery and each one of the seven notes is made to assume not only in different ragas but also in different compositions composed even in the same raga by various Vaggeyakaras.

Even after being heard hundreds of times, he leaves an impression of having much more in store. His sustained and successful effort in understanding and surfacing the varying shades of classicism reveals his ability. They credited him with setting the compositions of Annamayya to music as sublime as the emotions embedded in the lyrics.
