Nutshell - I

Annual competition

Hamsadhwani is conducting annual music competition (vocal), for sub-juniors, juniors and seniors, on Sunday, November 8, from 9.30 a.m., at Youth Hostel, II Avenue, Indira Nagar, Adyar.

Sub-juniors (age group seven-12 years) should enrol with a list of three kritis of three composers.

Juniors (age group 13-17 years) should be able to render five kritis covering Trinity, Papanasam Sivan and Narayana Tirtha.

Seniors (age group 18-22 years) must submit a list of seven kritis including the Trinity, Papanasam Sivan, Narayana Tirtha and other composers and do raga alapana, niraval, swaraprastharam for a kriti. In the senior category, a special prize will be awarded for excellent rendition of Muthuswamy Dikshithar kriti (endowed by Srimathy Indira Jayapal and P.S. Krishnamurthy in memory of their mothers Lakshmi and Janaki respectively). Enrolment with application fee of Rs. 20 has to be paid on the day of competition at the venue from 9.30 a.m. For details contact S.R. Jayasitalakshmi at 4230 0200 between 4 and 6 p.m.

Dance recital

Roja Kannan’s Bharatha Natyalaya presents a Bharatanatyam recital by Medha Subramani on November 7, 6.45 p.m., at Varasiddhi Vinayagar Sathsangam temple, 3rd Avenue, Besant Nagar.

Music series

Sarvani Sangeetha Sabha (Ph: 28151417) has organised a series of concerts that will comprise songs of lesser known composers of South India.

Ethno-musicologist Dr. SAK. Durga will provide the introduction and commentary for the programme, which will be held at Kasturi Srinivasan Hall, (Music Academy Mini Hall), TTK Road, on November 8, from 6 p.m. P.B. Srirangachari will present Adibhatla Narayana Das’s Telugu compositions, Nisha Rajagopal sings Kumar Ettendra’s Tamil works, Koviladi Madhawa Prasad renders Vijaya Dasa’s Kannada songs while Sudheer Warrier brings Iravivarman Thampi’s Malayalam music. The accompanists are A.G. Venkatasubramanian (violin) and P.B.V. Krishnamachari (mridangam).
