Dance recital

Zakir Husain

Zakir Husain, who impressed the audience with his ‘Narayanam’ in the past year is presenting ‘Yethiraja Vaibhavam’ for Brahma Gana Sabha on November 8, 6.30 p.m.

“The wide acclaim that my first production received encouraged me to try another thematic effort and the subject was Ethiraja,” explains Husain. “The more I read the more convinced I was about the subject. Ethiraja was a great soul and I hope I have managed to bring it across,” he adds.

Resource persons

Who were the resource persons? Zakir Husain consults Badri Bhattar of the Srirangam temple, which he visits often for inspiration and material.

“My eyes opened to the stupendous contribution of Ethiraja (Ramanuja), who was actually a revolutionary and an ace administrator,” says this disciple of Chitra Subramaniam.

Revathi Sankkaran (lyric verses), Dr. M.A. Venkatakrishnan and Anita Ratnam are the others who have helped the dancer put ‘Ethiraja Vaibhavam’ together.

Verses have been chosen from Divya Prabhandam, … and a single hymn from Andal’s Tiruppavai.

So what will be the dancer’s next move? “I learnt a lot during my research and was especially touched by the absolute devotion of Koorathazhvan. If all goes well, that could be my next project,” Zakir Husain concludes.
