Olympians join forces to wrest control of MHA
Mumbai (PTI): Olympians Gurbux Singh, Joaquim Carvalho and M M Somaya have come together to wrest control of Mumbai Hockey Association (MHA) in the metropolis by filing their nominations for the upcoming elections.
The trio, all renowned for their skills, will take on the sitting group's candidates, with tough-talking incumbent secretary Kehar Singh in the forefront, at the elections on June 29.
"We want to throw out Kehar Singh and his cronies," said 1984 Olympian Carvalho, who has filed his nomination for the post of secretary as well as for the nine-member managing committee.
Also in the fray for the secretary's post are Gurbux, former inside right and member of the 1968 Mexico Olympics bronze-winning squad, and his one-time colleague in the mercurial frontline of Western Railway team, Puran Singh.
It's on the cards that both Carvalho and Puran would withdraw their nominations by June 27 leaving Gurbux in a straight contest with incumbent Kehar Singh.
Former captain Somaya, a member of the Los Angeles Olympic Games squad with Carvalho, is bidding to be elected as one of the two vice-presidents.
Former internationals, goalkeeper Mir Ranjan Negi and forward Clarence Lobo, are contesting from Kehar Singh's side to fill spots in the managing committee.
