The write stuff
THE WRITER, Perumbadavam Sreedharan, dissects the various aspects of disease in the recent issue of the IMA's newsletter.
For him, disease represents pain, suffering or bereavement. It is a great leveller and a catalyst for catharsis in the haughty-minded. It is also a recurrent motif in literary classics of the world.
According to the novelist, disease, along with evil and faith, were the basic motifs for some of the classic literary works in the world.
In fact, Sreedharan's best-selling novel, "Oru Sankeerthanam Pole'' is based on the life of the Russian novelist, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, who himself was an epilepsy patient.
Sreedharan feels that a doctor's most important attribute is compassion. Patients stricken with a disease visit a doctor with a sense of fear and desperation, he points out.
A reassuring word or a comforting touch could work wonders with patients.
"The most wonderful dose of medicine is in your hands,'' he reminds physicians.
He also recommends Tara Shankar Bannerjee's "Aarogyanikethan'' as essential reading for all medical practitioners.
