Mushroom rock
INITIALLY, PEOPLE ignored it as some rock formation. Not anymore. The two huge boulders in the shape of mushroom, dating back to 145 billion years old, are the new tourism attraction in Nizamabad district.
Driving on the road to Banswada, just about 10 km away from Nizamabad, the rock formation in the Mallaram reserve forest has become a traffic stopper.
The whole place wears a colourful look with watchtowers and lawns. What more. A pagoda-type structure is fast coming up.
The total forest area spreads across 425 hectares from Sarangapur to Banswada and is said to be one of the thickest forest covers in Telangana. With the presence of wild animals such as panthers, neelagai, spotted deer and monkeys in the area, it's a visual treat for children.
No wonder members of National Cadet Corps, National Service Scheme volunteers and school and college students frequent the Mallaram area to take a peek at the mushroom rock.
Well, it was a chance visit by the former Collector, Asok Kumar, to the place that changed the look of the area.
Following Asok Kumar's prompting, Geological Survey of India officials inspected the rock and conducted carbon tests to determine the age of the rock.
They certified that the rock was 145 billion years old. Old is forever gold, eh!
