Jingling all the way!

Santa comes to town

MONKEY CAPS and gloves have become part of everyday gear here. With the night temperature falling considerably in the past few days, a mixture of icy wind and frost has affected normal life in Ooty.

Bonfire at street corners, particularly near auto-rickshaw and taxi stands is now a common sight. Many homebound pedestrians are ever so unable to resist the temptation of breaking their strides to join those snuggled up around the fire. According to many an old timer, this is one of the coldest winters. However, the bitter cold notwithstanding, thousands of people especially children gathered at the main Charing Cross and Commercial road areas and rejoiced on Wednesday night. And WHAT was the occasion? Santa had come to town! And of course sent the Christmas spirit soaring high.

For many years now, with Christmas just around the corner, good ole' Santa was always fervently looked forward to by folks here. It was arranged under the aegis of the Needle Industries at Ketti. Again a regular, the well-maintained garden along the Commercial Road was tastefully decorated and illuminated with blue serial lights, lending a European ambience to the entire stretch. A live band performing brought about the true aura of the Christmas Eve.

And then Santa, with his flowing beard made his appearance on his sleigh with a few actors around depicting a scene from the birth of Christ. The crowd roared with glee. Well it truly was Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!! On returning to Lawley Institute near the Government Botanical Garden from where he commenced his journey, Santa distributed balloons of different sizes to hundreds of children. To ensure that Santa's procession went off without a hitch, adequate security arrangements were made by the local police.
