She makes heads turn

RASHMI SHETTY: Looks matter. And modern technology is ready to lend a helping hand. SAHANA CHARAN talks to the young skin care expert who creates dream faces.

`The aim is to mask the signs of ageing'

BEAUTY MIGHT lie within, but in these days of first impressions the new mantra is: what you see is what you get. And you do not need a specialist to tell you that your skin is not ageless. Your skin is a reflection of yourself and you need to take good care of it, says Rashmi Shetty, skin care expert and cosmetologist. And looking good is certainly on everybody's agenda, be it a model on the ramp or a bank employee.

She does not look much more than a teenager with her slight frame and young face. But there is much more to her — she has celebrities, businessmen and women and even bureaucrats flocking to her for succour.

A Bangalore girl, who is now a noted cosmetologist in Mumbai, Rashmi Shetty was recently in the City and spoke about how skin care has gone beyond the realm of home remedies and is highly technology based. "The aim is to mask the signs of ageing which are reflected mostly on your skin. We provide different types of therapy that help in making a person look younger and feel good."

Just to give an example, a client who shows frown lines between the eyebrows or crow's feet around the eyes and depressions near the mouth, will have these lines dramatically removed after the treatment. And most importantly, they look more relaxed. The secret is Botox, a medicine which when locally injected in these areas erases fine lines and wrinkles and keeps it that way for months.

"Botox treatment is popular in the West and is slowly becoming known here. But since most people want to look good with minimum procedure and pain, it is rapidly catching on."

Other than Botox, she specialises in enzyme treatment for removing dead skin layer and brightening the skin; skin lightening using special acids and serums to visibly enhance the complexion and smoothen the skin; and Restylane for passive and deep lines.

Her clinic also does procedures such as lip enhancement and face contouring without any surgery.

But she adds a word of caution — "these procedures should be done by experienced persons such as dermatologists and cosmetologists and beauty salons that take care of their clients' skin should know where to draw the line."

"The biggest advantage of this kind of therapy is that there is no elaborate procedure or surgery but just the poke of a needle. Since there are no drastic changes unlike plastic surgery and other treatments, the result is most often good. And the client can immediately go to work or carry on other duties."

And her clients are as varied as they can get. "My clients are from different backgrounds and are in the age group of 18 to 80 years. Though I attend to many celebrities and models, the majority are common people who want to stall the ageing process."

Many of her clients in Bangalore are from the corporate sector. A consultant for Lakme-Levers, she has also set up a clinic in Sri Lanka where this treatment is much in demand. She is planning on starting a consultancy in Bangalore in collaboration with a local hospital.

As a parting note, her advice to all beauty conscious persons is: "Keep out of the sun as much as you can, as that is the major factor that contributes to ageing. Cleanse and nourish your skin well. Nothing can be better for a radiant complexion than a good diet and sleep, exercise, and drinking lots of water."
