From Ceret to Mahe
A group of French students and teachers on a visit to Mahe.
THEY HAVE come from Ceret, a small town in southern France that was once frequented by many great modern artists including Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dahli, Matisse and Braque. Their visit to this jolie petite ville de Mahe, as the French once used to call this erstwhile French colony, is not exactly to encounter the French connection of Mahe.
The 14-member group of young French students and their teachers from the School of Four Winds, a local "alternative school for environment and other studies'' near Ceret, is here to learn the art and culture and environment of the region. The group comprises 11 students in the age group of nine and 16 and three teachers.
Coming as it does from a place that is known among artists as `Capitol of Cubism', one of the objectives of the group is to forge an international collective in the field of art and culture and to acquaint the young students with environment and people of different parts of the world. "Normal schooling of the students in the group is not hit by the tour as students and teachers do their classroom activities in the morning wherever they go'', says Anna Marais, who teaches English.
After the normal classes the students will be encouraged to do activities such as traditional arts, sports, fishing, weaving and cooking, she says. Elise Armengier, the French and History teacher, and Ghierry Bourgeois, a Belgian, who teaches Mathematics, are the other two teachers.
The group will leave for Wayanad where they will stay a few weeks before return to Ceret in March.
