FLIGHTS OF FANTASY

Vision 2050!

I set out for my morning walk with my friend and Cabinet Secretary, Sandeep, of course, without any bodyguards. Perhaps, India is the only country where the Prime Minister can mingle freely with people and I think this is what a Prime Minister's duty is - to feel one among the subjects. Over a cup of tea, I go through the headlines of The Hindu. It reads:

February 26, 2050.

1) `India imposes sanctions on U.S. for testing biological weapons'

2) `Indian rocket Ramanujam lands on Jupiter'

3) `New train Vijetha Express proposed between Karachi and Secunderabad'

I scan the sports section

1) `Deadly duo, Shoaib (Akthar) and Zaheer (Khan), rattle the Aussies at Jammu'

2) `Palestine and Israel (win the bid) to host the next Olympics'

My eyes fall on the `50 years ago' column. India had umpteen problems then. The ideology was `Roti, Kapada, Makaan'. Today, it is `Khao Piyo, Mast Jiyo'

The latest news was that a deal had been struck with the Russian Government for sale of the old and dilapidated Indian naval ship `Viraat', which was discarded from the Indian Naval five years ago.

Then came the news of the Indian film `Makaan' sweeping the Oscars!

I retired to my bed a happy man. Everyday is like that these days in India!
