On the fast track
A view of Kotturpuram slums and multi-storeyed apartments.
AGAINST THE backdrop of the TIDEL park edifice, the mass rapid transit system (MRTS) ride from Thiruvanmiyur to Chintadripet on Thursday morning conjured up mixed reactions from passengers. Even encouraging dreams about whether Chennai would turn global like the London city - where the underground tube railway is the lifeline.
The commencement of MRTS services by the Southern Railway has received bouquets. However, there have been brickbats too. While commuters are happy over the introduction of a non-polluting facility, they are sore that the amenity has not been vigorously publicised to attract more commuters.
"Why not bring in the much tested concept of `hub and spoke' on the lines of the aviation sector? The Railways could hold discussions with the Metropolitan Transport Corporation to make the buses pick up and drop passengers at the Thiruvanmiyur MRTS station," explains an employee of a call centre working at the TIDEL Park. He is now a frequent traveller of the MRTS facility between Thiruvanmiyur and Beach. Though they welcome the Southern Railway authorities' announcement to operate additional pairs of Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) on the Thiruvanmiyur-Beach section, commuters are irked over the lack of cleanliness in the EMUs. "Why can't the Railway authorities add more colour and comfort to the EMUs? Perhaps, they could have a tie-up with the State Tourism Department to depict images of different tourist destinations," another commuter says.
