Sportsman spirit

It cannot be said of the outgoing president of the KPCC and the new Minister for Electricity, K. Muraleedharan, that he is a sportsman. But he certainly has the sportsman spirit kindling in him.

What else could have made him toe the line of the Congress high command and to meekly accept the proposal to be inducted into the State cabinet, in a bid to resolving the crisis in the State unit of the party?

It was, perhaps, even against the wishes of his father and veteran Congress leader, K. Karunakaran that Muraleedharan, decided to quit the top post in the party hierarchy in the State and to join as the 21st Minister in the Antony cabinet. It was this sportsman spirit that made him bury the hatchet and to resolve to serve under A. K. Antony, whom he has been subjecting to severe criticism over the past eight months or so.

One of the first public functions that Muraleedharan attended after assuming office as the Minister for Electricity was the annual sports meet of the Press Club, Thiruvananthapuram. After hoisting the flag and formally declaring the meet open, he also inaugurated the first event of the day by "putting the shot".

Earlier he had also obliged to wear the T-shirt presented to him before the start of the meet and to formally initiate the proceedings by putting the shot. When a few lensmen asked him to pose yet again with the shot before hurling it in the air, he readily agreed and that certainly made a wonderful "keep sake" photograph.
