Clothes for the occasion

Stylish and sublime

LIKE MOST things in today's world, Maha Shivarathri has two sides. One of piety and religious observances and another of commerce. The faithful fast through the day or make do with just fruits and juice and perhaps milk or majjige. In the days before cable TV, local associations used to arrange video shows of devotional films near temples: an easy way of helping the pious stay awake till late into the night and then break their fast. There were also cinemas which had late night shows. Now, all that may have disappeared but night-long bhajans and lines of people waiting for the darshan of the Lord in temples are still common. Taking a cue from "festival merchandising" and drawing from his own creative inspiration, young designer, Manjunath, has cottton clothes for the occasion. Of course, the hairdo and other accessories are optional. His creations can be seen at the Studio near Casa Piccola on Cunningham Road.
