FEB. 17.
An exhibition of prize-winning paintings, cartoons and dolls in the national-level competition held for schoolchildren from all over India would be held at Jawahar Bal Bhavan, Public Gardens, here from February 22.
The prize-winning entries were chosen from about 6,000 entries in the 38th All India Child Art Conest-2003 annual competition organised by the Child Art Club National Council (CACNC), a voluntary organisation, in July last.
Disclosing this to mediapersons, CACNC co-founder, Sarojini Babji, said that the organisation was set up by her late husband and art director L.S. Babjee in 1967 with the aim of promoting art and literature among normal and mentally and physically challenged children to bring out their latent talents.
The four-day exhibition being organised in association with Jawahar Bal Bhavan would be inaugurated at Bal Bhavan Art Gallery.
The director of Bal Bhavan, A.M. Rao, said that the exhibition would give children exposure to the work of students from different States and inspire them to hone their skills further.
Ms. Sarojini said that children in the age group of 5 to 16 years from about 300 schools, including schools for the mentally and physically challenged from different States took part in the contest. The children chose their own themes and sent their entries by post. In each age group 150 gold, silver and copper medals were awarded besides 600 State medals and merit certificates.
There were special awards--`Child Stars' awards for the best painting, story and poem in the categories of normal, physically and mentally challenged students, Vidya Ratna for the best Principal, Kala Bhushan for the best art teacher and three best schools, one each for normal, mentally retarded and physically challenged students.
"A permanent place to set up our own gallery for exhibiting the works of children which we receive in large numbers is our dream," she said.
